More than just "possible," cycling is a reality for 1 out of 4 households in the PH Social Weather Stations has conducted five probability-based nationwide surveys from May 2020 to May 2021 and continues to do so during the pandemic. The side of the road is typically riddled with potholes, open manholes, or debris so we also need our space to ride safely. Bike lanes: blocked by cars even when there's plenty of space. Violations tolerated by enforcers. But once the other lanes are filled with cars, the tolerance ends. Suddenly, the bike lanes are blamed for congestion. Tolerant enforcement turns into swift action for the car-owning minority. We stand our ground. Bike lanes are there to protect people who ride bikes. Safety takes precedence over driving speed and convenience. Human lives are more important than privilege and convenience. We have prioritized cars in our cities for many decades—widening roads, tearing down sidewalks and even entire households. It hasn't fixed anything and it never will. There were 47 bicycles when this photo was taken—47 people using only six car parking slots. They could be customers or employees, all equally deserving of properly designed end of trip facilities. After all, businesses can only operate if both of them exist. How's the parking situation in your place/s of business?
"Three years na mula nung binuo ko ito. Hindi ko na ginagamit yung four wheels ko kasi mas komportable ako dito." Bing Guillo, 70, went on a trip to a Japan surplus store three years ago in search of a bike that could allow him to get around more conveniently. He had a specific bike in mind, something that could fit a motor and allow him to conquer hills with ease. "Tamang-tama ito kasi karamihan ng bisikleta maliit ang batalya, pero ito kasya yung makina kaya binili ko." He then went on to build his freedom machine. As of today he has ridden to Laguna and Bulacan by himself, from his home in Makati. He says he likes riding to parks to get exercise and breathe in some fresh air. Though his bike is powered by fuel, Guillo makes a strong case for pedal assist bicycles in the Philippines. Now that bike lane networks are being built across the country, one of the next steps should be to provide subsidies for e-bike purchases to encourage people, young ang old, to make the switch. #BikeBikeBike #SharetheCity
